Zindzi Mandela

Following the passing of Zindzi Mandela, the youngest daughter of South Africa’s first black president Nelson Mandela and anti-apartheid activist Winnie Madikizela-Mandela who died at age 59, condolences are continuing to pour into South Africa’s most loved family.

Zindzi died in a Johannesburg hospital in the early hours of Monday morning,  according to South Africa’s Public Broadcaster – The SABC.

Zindzi Mandela Biography

Zindzi Mandela was born on 23 December 1960 in Soweto.  In the same year, the African Nationa Congress (ANC) launched its armed wing.  Her parents were wanted by the government, by the time her father was sent to prison Zindzi was 18 months old.  During her youth,  Zindzi was often left in the care of her older sister Zenani Mandela when her mother was sent to prison for months at a time.

She was an activist by heart from a very young age,  and was recently bashed for her views on “Apartheid Apologists”.  The fallen Mandela’s daughter was serving as ambassador to Denmark at the time of her death, as a matter of coincidence, she is the second of Mandela’s children to meet death on the date (13 – July).  In 1969 on the very same date Nelson Mandela’s Eldest son, Thembekile Mandela died in a car accident while his father was serving a life sentence on Robben Island.

Zindzi Mandela was Nelson Mandela’s sixth child and his second with Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, his second wife.

The South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa said in a statement Zindzi Mandela had during our years of struggle brought home the inhumanity of the apartheid system and the unshakeable resolve of our fight for freedom.

“I offer my deep condolences to the Mandela family as we mourn the passing of a fearless political activist who was a leader in her own right. Our sadness is compounded by this loss being visited upon us just days before the world marks the birthday of the great Nelson Mandela” pic.twitter.com/RC0YQ6VEvf

Political Leaders and other influential people have taken to Social Media their condolences.

Her passing comes just a few days before South Africa and the world celebrates the International Mandela Day on the 18th of July.
